CONNECT
A practical framework for safer,
more human conversations.
CONNECT is Recovery Together’s signature communication framework for frontline workers, support professionals and organisations who support people through distress, uncertainty, change, identity, recovery and everyday life challenges.
The framework gives workers a clear, memorable way to stay grounded in complex conversations without rushing to fix, dismissing emotion, taking over, or stepping outside their role.
At its heart, CONNECT is about helping people feel heard, respected, safer and more in control.
The CONNECT Framework
C — Create safety
Create emotional, physical and relational safety before moving into deeper conversation. This includes slowing down, reducing pressure, respecting choice, and noticing what the person may need to feel safe enough to engage.
O — Open the conversation
Begin gently and purposefully. Use open, respectful prompts that invite the person to share what matters to them, without forcing disclosure or assuming what they need.
N — Notice and listen
Listen beyond the words. Notice tone, body language, behaviour, hesitation, changes from baseline, and what may be sitting underneath the surface.
N — Name and validate emotion
Acknowledge what the person may be feeling in a way that is respectful and human. Validation does not mean agreeing with everything, it means recognising that the person’s experience matters.
E — Explore strengths, needs and options
Move from distress or uncertainty into possibility. Explore what is already helping, what strengths are present, what the person needs, and what options may support recovery, safety, autonomy or connection.
C — Choose the next step together
Support shared decision-making. Rather than taking over, help the person choose a next step that feels realistic, manageable and meaningful to them.
T — Transition, refer or follow up
Close the conversation safely. This may include summarising, checking understanding, planning follow-up, documenting key information, referring to appropriate supports, or escalating concerns when needed.
CONNECT Professional Development Series
The CONNECT Professional Development Series applies the CONNECT framework across different practice areas, communities and support contexts.
Each course is designed to strengthen communication, confidence and ethical practice for workers who support people in real-world settings.

CONNECT: Psychosocial Conversations
Recovery-oriented communication with people living with psychosocial disability.
This course supports workers to have safer, more validating and recovery-oriented conversations with people experiencing psychosocial disability, emotional distress, reduced confidence, isolation, fluctuating mental health, or complex support needs. Participants learn how to create safety, listen with purpose, validate emotion, support autonomy, and encourage next steps without taking over.

CONNECT: Affirming Conversations
LGBTIQA+ inclusive and identity-affirming communication.
This course supports workers to communicate in ways that are inclusive, respectful and affirming of LGBTIQA+ people and communities.
Participants explore identity-affirming language, psychological safety, disclosure, minority stress, respectful curiosity, and how to avoid assumptions that may unintentionally harm or exclude.
Why CONNECT?
CONNECT is not about turning workers into counsellors.
It is about giving workers a practical framework for the conversations they are already having.
Across disability, mental health, community services, support coordination, recovery coaching, peer work and frontline practice, workers are often present at moments when people feel distressed, uncertain, overwhelmed or unheard.
CONNECT helps workers respond with confidence, compassion and clarity.
It strengthens everyday conversations so they become safer, more purposeful and more recovery-oriented.
Bring CONNECT to Your Team
The CONNECT Professional Development Series can be delivered as individual courses or tailored training for teams and organisations.
